A children’s environmental mystery adventure!Meant to be experienced by adult and child (or adolescent) together, this book will tune you both into nature as you search for an answer to a watery problem with young Pilar and her animal friends. Something is not right in the forest, and its creatures are desperate for help. They’re used to living only in the present, and need someone who can think ahead - and someone who can hear their voices. Pilar, visiting her grandpa at the lake this summer, is drawn into the mystery with a heroic dog-friend named Bones, and together they trek to the “other side” in a memorable, though-provoking quest. I wrote this book for my children to read to their children, as entertainment primarily, but also a way to teach new words and concepts. It isn't written in childish language, and is very much intended to be a shared, experience between adult and child. I used to make up stories to tell my kids at bedtime, and was surprised how the characters stuck with them into adulthood. They remember the names better than I do! I wanted to create that bedtime excitement in a way that could be shared with next generations of my family, but the reaction has been so strong that I now want to share it with other parents and children, and grand parents and grand children. This isn't a story that was mapped out or outlined. As with the plays that I write, I created characters and then followed them where they took me. The result was a special tale that winds through a forest, with special friends learning how to communicate and cope with surprising challenges.Listen to Crying Trees with your children today! 1. In the year 2044, reporters from the Public Relations Ministry gather at the home of Benjamin Harker, the last surviving member of the Harlem Hellfighters. At the age of 144, he is the oldest recorded man alive. Hidden among them, Clyde Bruner is looking for a different kind of story. Across the US, despite the Great Walls and patrol drones built to keep America secure, something has found its way in. Now, towns are vanishing during the night. Entire populations, gone, only to return after the sun sets, changed, unholy, and lethal. Whatever this evil is, its spreading west. According to a bedtime story Bruner’s grandfather told him when he was a boy, Benjamin Harker has seen this before. He’s faced this scourge. Fought this evil. Survived them. Killed them. From the trenches of the Great War to the jungles of Vietnam to the sands of Iraq, Harker will search his past to save our future. But as each city light extinguishes across the country, is there no time left to stop what’s coming? 1. Quicklet on Rick Riordan's The Lightning Thief

Quicklets: Learn More. Read Less. The Lightning Thief started out as a bedtime story for Rick Riordan's oldest son. After writing adult mysteries for some time, Riordan decided to try his hand at children's fiction. Making up a tale for his son was the perfect place to begin. The story takes ancient Greek mythology and brings it into the modern world. Riordan creates a here-and-now in which gods and creatures of myth and legend are still active, though perhaps not in the ways we would expect. The Greek gods' palace on Mount Olympus has shifted to the new center of Western civilization the United States, but the gods still get up to their old tricks. They still fight, and fall in love, and have children with mortal humans. The story of one half-human, half-god boy, Perseus Jackson, is the basis of The Lightning Thief. Riordan takes a fantastic what-if idea 'what if the Greek gods still existed and had half-divine children in the modern world?' and creates a rousing adventure tale of friendship, courage, and doing what's right. ABOUT THE AUTHOR Nicole has been writing since she could make letters with a pencil, and has been making a living at it for more than ten years. She has gone back to school too many times, studying archaeology, folklore, writing and visual art. She writes fiction under several pen names, and also does printmaking, book arts, and photography. She's an avid amateur natural historian with a particular fascination for things that fly, whether it's birds, bats or insects. And if it's possible to be both a luddite, with a love for the low-tech, and a technophile, with a fascination for everything new and shiny, Nicole is both. She reads too many books, plays too many video games, and watches too much anime.

A brooding monster. A quirky professor. A small Indiana town with a soul of its own. Imagine if the writers of Northern Exposure sat down with Stephen King and decided to craft a dark fantasy thriller starring absent-minded academians, every day goofballs, and a dark fantasy creature for good measure. Pondering big picture questions like 'Why am I here?' and 'Does Love Conquer All?' has never been so fun. That's THIS BRILLIANT DARKNESS, the top-rated dark fantasy debut novel by the author of TROLL OR DERBY, Red Tash. Nothing is as it seems to be, and no one behaves in ways characters are 'supposed' to act. How will it end? It's anyone's guess, in a book that keeps you turning pages, racing to find out what will happen next. Christine Grace finds her predictable scholarly life comforting, if a bit boring. Her live-in boyfriend presses her for marriage, but she's too philosophically inclined to take an interest. So, really, why does she suddenly start imagining things in the window's reflection? Is time truly starting and stopping all around her, or is she inexplicably cracking up? Greachin is an age-old being so tortured by his own karmic cycle that he no longer knows how to connect, except to identify potential threats through the cosmic ripples of space. When he zeroes in on Christine Grace, he experiences second thoughts for the first time in millenia. Will he go through with his grisly plan of murder and destruction? And what of these other characters--an aging physicist of ill-repute, a stubborn monk who takes his vow of silence too far, and a time-shifting star visible only from Bloomington? What a tangled web we weave, when monsters practice to deceive. Dive into This Brilliant Darkness, and follow the journeys of these characters, from Britain to the Heartland, from January's snowfall to Halloween's costumed festivities. THIS BRILLIANT DARKNESS is a smart, karmic mystery populated by lovable brainy characters. Climb on, strap in, and hold tight. Readers are saying: 'This is a fast-paced, exciting book that keeps you guessing until the very end. With an eclectic cast of characters, time travel and a karmic mystery, how can you go wrong?' ~Zombie Bedtime Stories author Thea Gregory 'By midnight, I had not put the book down, and had no intention of putting it down. At 12:15am, my fourteen-year-old son stumbled out to get a drink of water. 'You're still up?' he asked. 'Go to bed.' I looked up from my Nook, smiled, and said, 'Not on your life, dude. Not until this ends.' ~Librarian Amy Marshall 'The way the author weaves fantasy, humor, science fiction, and mystery is, for lack of a better word, brilliant. I read the entire thing with admiration/envy, taking notes and thinking 'THIS is how you write a novel.' Remember when Scream blew the horror world away by actually using technology in a realistic way? Well here's blogging and online forums and long distance cyber friendships, honestly depicting the way we live in the 21st century.' ~Poet Christina Grey AN OFFICIAL JAMES MASON COMMUNITY BOOK CLUB MUST READ 'The atmosphere of this book, so hard to simply label horror or paranormal...how about simply...A GREAT READ, is the true star. Ms. Tash so finely weaves a path of intrigue, terror, humor and suspense, that the reader is taken with each character, so very finely drawn. THIS BRILLIANT DARKNESS is that rare book that one truly does not want to end!! When it does...next question is 'What else by Red Tash can I get my hands on? QUICK!!!''~ Rick Friedman
